As the U.S. avocado crisis prepares to move into a second week, the guacamole essential is getting more and more difficult to find.
Bloomberg reports the avocado supply will soon run out at many smaller restaurant chains and independent grocery stores and eateries, since they do not have the buying power of big names like Chipotle, Taco Bell and Kroger.
The situation started to escalate Feb. 11, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture stopped avocado imports from a region near Mexico City. Officials say an American supervisor received a threatening call after an inspector refused to certify an avocado shipment over pest- and health-related risks. The USDA said it will not left the ban until it is certain employees are safe.
According to Mexican government data cited by Bloomberg, avocado prices in Mexico have nearly tripled from a year ago.
