Have your car airbags been recalled?

Getting an auto safety recall notice in the mail may not seem like a big deal, but if the issue is with your airbags, ignoring that notification can be dangerous or even deadly.

June is Airbag Recall Repair Month in Texas, which leads the nation with more than 1.2 million vehicles that have unrepaired, recalled airbags.  About a quarter of those statewide are in the Dallas area.

Chris Freeman is a spokesperson for Check To Protect, a statewide campaign that encourages drivers to make safety a priority by taking immediate action to prevent serious injury and death.  Freeman said that when airbags are exposed over time to heat and humidity, recalled airbags can transform from life-saving devices to life-threatening ones.

Freeman said it is fast, free and easy for a vehicle owner to check for airbag recalls and get them repaired.  Drivers can visit CheckToProtect.org, enter a license plate number or the vehicle's 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and schedule a free repair appointment at a local dealership.

Freeman talked about the importance of responding to airbag recall notices as he spoke with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
