From flashlights to fire extinguishers to first-aid kits, this is the weekend to stock up on emergency supplies.
The year's first Texas Tax-Free Weekend begins Sat., April 23 at 12:01 a.m. and runs through midnight on Mon., April 25. Consumers can save the state and local sales tax on certain emergency preparation items.
The break applies to portable generators with a total sales price under $3,000, emergency ladders and hurricane shutters below $300 and a lengthy list of lesser-priced items, including axes, batteries, non-electric coolers and ice chests and portable self-powered radios, including weather band radios.
Consumers are urged to check the full list from the Texas Comptroller's office, as not all emergency items qualify for the tax exemption. There is no limit on the number of items that can be purchased, and no exemption certificate is required.
The next sales tax holiday, which exempts the tax on Energy Star-certified items, is set for Memorial Day Weekend, May 28-30. The most-popular of the sales tax weekends, covering school supplies, apparel and shoes, is scheduled for Aug. 5-7.
