Six Flags Over Texas is opening a new ride this weekend that draws inspiration from one of the park's favorite rides of the past.
Pirates of Speelunker Cave opens to season pass holders on Friday for a sneak preview and to the general public on Saturday, May 13th.
"It is a nod to our beloved Cave ride that opened in 1964," Six Flags Over Texas General Manager Sharon Parker recently told KRLD. "The characters that were featured are Speelunkers, and they will be making a reappearance."
The Cave operated at the park from 1964 to 1991. It was an indoor "dark ride". Passengers in a small boat were taken through a cave to watch the activities of the animatronic Speelunkers. The ride was memorable for its atmospheric lighting and extremely cold air conditioning, which was popular with guests during hot Texas summers.
The new Pirates of Speelunker Cave will include both digital and physical sets, improved animatronics and a storyline focusing on a pirate treasure hunt. There's no minimum height requirement, which means that families can all go on the ride together. It's one of three new rides opening at Six Flags Over Texas this year.
