It was stolen nearly 50 years ago, and now a Dallas auction house has returned a one of a kind painting to it's original owner.
The painting is called Eyes Upon You, it's a painting by Margaret Keane who is renowned for her work that features subjects with expressive, oversized eyes.
A Hawian dentist worked with the artist and provided a photo of his then 7-year-old daughter who is depicted in the painting along with several other children. The painting was intended to show Hawaii's racial diversity.
The painting was stolen in 1972, and the family has tried over the years to locate it.
Last year Dallas-based Heritage Auctions was consigned to sell the painting the owner claiming it was bought from a New Jersey gallery back in the 80's.
Once Heritage discovered the art was stolen it was returned to it's rightful owner.
The family says it has an emotional attachment to the painting and is thrilled to have it back after all these years.
