Tarrant County judge issues warning for reopening bars to obey COVID rules

As many bars in Tarrant County get ready to reopen today, Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley is issuing a word of warning to bar owners, to obey the rules, or else.

During the Tarrant County Commissioners Court meeting yesterday, Whitley singled out the Varsity Tavern in Fort Worth's West 7th District for allegedly exceeding the COVID capacity limits and not requiring people to wear masks, as it has been operating as a restaurant - making it exempt to some rules.

"If I see the bars begin to open back up and disregarding the rules as flagrantly as a "restaurant" did, I have no qualms what-so ever in shutting it down next week" said Judge Whitley.

Fort Worth Code Compliance Director Brandon Bennett says the Varsity Tavern has done a poor job of enforcing capacity and mask rules.

The Varsity Tavern has been a source of controversy in the past, amid allegations of selectively enforcing its dress code to keep certain people out.

KRLD has reached out to the Varsity Tavern on social media throughout the week for a response and has not heard back.
