An 18-year-old is dead after a small plane crashed after it ran out of fuel Wednesday night in rural Johnson County, officials say.

The crash happened at about 9 p.m. Wednesday outside of Godley, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Police said nearby residents called 911 after they heard the crash.

Police said officers and firefighters responded to the crash site about 5 miles south of Godley and found a grass fire surrounding a small plane.

After crews extinguished the flames, they discovered one person had died in the crash. DPS identified the man as 18-year-old Jon Diego Monreal of Crowley.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will work to determine what caused the crash.
