If you drive past Red Tail Pavilion along East Spring Creek Parkway this week, you won't be able to miss the sea of red, white, and blue.
Starting Saturday, November 7, through November 14, Plano Flags of Honor returns for its 10th anniversary, transforming the open grounds at Oak Point Park into a living memorial of 1,111 American flags.
Each flag stands placed with military precision—set at exact 10-foot intervals so the diagonals pop into view as you walk the rows. Attached to every pole is an honor card and dog tags telling the personal story of a veteran, active-duty service member, or first responder.
"Every Flag Tells a Story"
For event co-founder and Vietnam veteran Ian, the display was born out of a desire to create the homecoming and recognition that previous generations never received:
"When I came home from Vietnam, we didn’t have anything like this at all. We initially had 1,000 flags, but we made it 1,111 for 11/11—Veterans Day. It’s designed to be an experience. If you walk through at dawn when the mist is on the ground, or in the middle of the night, or when the breeze picks up and you hear the flags flapping—every visit feels different."
Community members can dedicate a flag to their loved ones online for free, and on-site docents are available all week to help families locate their specific cards.
