FANNIN COUNTY — Three young brothers died Monday after falling through the ice on a pond in Bonham during the winter storm sweeping North Texas, authorities said.
The boys, all elementary school students in the Bonham Independent School District, were playing near a pond when the tragedy occurred. Relatives have confirmed the siblings were brothers ages 6, 8, and 9.
Bonham Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and found the children in the freezing water. They were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. At this time, authorities have not released the names of the victims pending family notification.
Bonham ISD Superintendent said the district is “devastated by this unimaginable loss” and is offering counseling and support for students, staff, and the community. School officials urged families to watch for signs of grief and to reach out to support services.
The tragedy comes amid an arctic blast that has brought frigid temperatures, ice and snow to much of North Texas, prompting warnings about hazardous conditions and urging residents to avoid frozen water.
This remains a developing story. We’ll update with more details as they become available.
