A 4-year-old boy named Mecai got to be chief for a day in Dallas on Friday.
He met several officers and police Chief Eddie Garcia about a month ago at the hospital while he was visiting his mother.
Garcia promised to make him chief and his grandmother said it happened Friday. Camilla McKinley said her grandson got to ride a police horse, pet a K-9, sit on a motorcycle, and even sit in the chief's chair and talk to other officers during a meeting.
He also got his own uniform. She said when he learned he would be chief for the day he said, "They have to call me Chief Mecai." She said it was like Christmas for Mecia.
"It was just an amazing day of learning and love for Mecai," McKinley said. "He was able to get love from people that he doesn't know, but who learned of his education and that he is a bright young man, as well as they learned that his mother has some very serious health challenges."
They spend a lot of time in the hospital because his 25-year-old mother has a chronic medical condition and requires a very specialized surgery that can not be performed in North Texas is and not covered by insurance.
Garcia posted a picture of them on social media, writing, "We met almost a month ago at the hospital, today we kept our promise. Thanks 'Chief Mecai!' Dallas PD has prayers up for your mama! Amazing young man! I don’t know who had a better time today, him or me."
A GoFundMe has been set up for the family.
