5.1 earthquake rattles West Texas, felt in DFW, Austin areas

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Midland shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 20 miles west of Ackerly and 20 miles south of Lamesa.

Earlier that day, a smaller 1.5 magnitude earthquake hit near Stanton, only a few miles southeast of the larger Monday night tremor.

Initially, the USGS had reported the earthquake as a 4.8 magnitude.
