DALLAS, TX (1080 KRLD) - A 5K and festival in Dallas Saturday will raise money to support kids, adults and veterans with disabilities. "The Dash 2023" takes place at the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge.
"We're providing, not just empowering, but we're providing purpose and hope to a group that, generally speaking, is excluded or thought of not able to do certain things," says U&I Chief Executive Hugh Breland.
Breland says the non-profit can connect people with disabilities with services that are available. He says the organization also provides job training to help people become self-sufficient.
"We're the answer to the question of those families with kids with disabilities, 'Where do we go after high school?' We're that answer," he says. "For a homeless veteran who needs new skills or housing, transportation or a job, we're the answer to his or her question, 'Where do I turn?' We can help them find all of those things if we don't have it ourselves."
Breland says the organization has about 200 people working for the organization who have disabilities. He says they worked 60,000 hours last year.
Registration begins at 4:30 Saturday.
Bands will start playing at 5 pm, and there will be food trucks and a kids' zone. The 5K begins at 7:30.
Registration for the 1K costs $25 onsite Saturday; registration for the 5K is $35. People can get a five dollar discount by registering ahead of time at TheDash23.com.
