Accused murderer faces new charge

CARROLLTON (1080 KRLD) A Rowlett man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend is now facing another charge.

According to the district attorney's office, Andrew Beard, 33, is charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm silencer, which is a federal offense.

Beard is also accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, 24-year-old Alyssa Burkett. The two were involved in contentious custody battle, police say.

At the end of September, Burkett was awarded custody of their daughter. On Oct. 2, she was stabbed and shot in front of the Carrollton apartment complex she worked at.

A few days later, Beard surrendered to Carrollton police. He was then released from jail on a $1 million bond.

With the new charge, Beard is in federal custody. He was arrested yesterday and according to the DA's office, prosecutors will seek federal detention.
