ALLEN (1080 KRLD)- An aspiring firefighter collapsed during a training exercise last week, and doctors are still trying to figure out what's wrong.

The Allen Fire Department was hosting a graduation for its Citizens' Fire Academy to show people how fire departments work. 18-year-old JJ Perez was running through a physical ability test when his sister, Crystal Hall says he collapsed.

Allen Fire Chief Jonathan Boyd says his firefighters are also trained as paramedics, so they started CPR and used a defibrillator to re-start Perez' heart. Boyd tells our media partner NBC5 that he and other members of the department have been visiting Perez.

Perez is still in ICU as doctors try to figure out why he went into cardiac arrest.
