Police in Alvarado are investigating after a family’s dog was shot and killed in its fenced backyard last month.
The Alvarado Police Department said the shooting happened Feb. 25 in the Stonegate Manor neighborhood between 11 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. A 4-year-old basset hound named Sheriff was shot three times while in the yard during daylight hours.
The dog’s owners said Sheriff was already dead by the time they arrived at a nearby animal hospital. The family said the dog suffered gunshot wounds near his rib cage and spine.
Another dog that was in the yard at the time was not physically injured but remains traumatized, the family said.
Investigators are working to determine a motive and identify a suspect. The family is offering a $1,500 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
