Fort Worth-based American Airlines is raising checked baggage fees for domestic and shorter international flights because of the increasing cost of jet fuel to the ongoing military operation in Iran.

The airline increased the cost of a first checked bag to $50 and a second to $60 for most domestic and short-haul international flights, effective for tickets purchased starting Thursday. Customers who pay for bags online or through the airline’s app can receive a $5 discount on each bag.

The policy also outlines higher fees in some situations. A third checked bag now costs $200 for most routes. Meanwhile, passengers flying on basic economy tickets may pay more than standard fares, with additional charges set to take effect later this year.

Customers flying in premium cabins, along with certain elite status members and co-branded credit card holders, may receive one or more checked bags at no additional cost.

American cited rising jet fuel prices tied to ongoing military activity in Iran as a key reason for the increase. The move follows similar fee hikes by other major U.S. carriers, including Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
