American Airlines is expecting an increase in the number of passengers traveling in the period around Thanksgiving this year compared to last year. The Fort Worth-based carrier is planning for an additional 500,000 passengers in the period from Nov. 21 through Dec. 3.

"Thanks to the hard work of our 130,000 team members, we cancelled fewer flights than any of our major competitors this October and beat our own records for on-time departures and arrivals," American's COO David Seymour said. "When you purchase a ticket on American, you're trusting us to provide a safe and reliable journey. We are ready to continue delivering on that promise this Thanksgiving."

American Airlines said it expects the most-traveled day will be Sunday, Dec. 1. The second most-traveled day will be Monday, Dec. 2.

The airline has also been preparing crews to deal with any possible winter weather.
