Rodney Thomas has launched his campaign to be the next Sheriff of Dallas County.
Thomas is a veteran of some federal law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Thomas says his experience makes him the right person to make changes at the Dallas County Jail. He calls the working conditions there "unsafe" and says the living conditions for the inmates are "deplorable". He wants to advocate for progressive reforms in the criminal justice system.
Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez announced last week that she was running for office again. She left the position for an unsuccessful campaign for Governor of Texas. Since then, Marian Brown has been the Sheriff of Dallas County. She's also expected to run for reelection.
The party primaries are in the spring of 2024 and the general election will be in November of 2024.
