The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has officially closed the books on a complex capital murder case out of Highland Park that began in 1988 and ended in 2018.
The case involves former Doctor George Guo of Houston.
Court records show that in 1988 he raped then strangled 28-year-old Dr. Katherine Bascone of Highland Park, leaving her in a vegetative state for 30-years. The brain injury left her blind, confined to a bed and needing nursing care the rest of her life.
In 2018 Bascone finally died from her injuries and doctors were able to say the death was related to the 1988 attack.
Because capital murder has no statute of limitations prosecutors were finally able to open 30-year old evidence that contained DNA, linking the case to Guo.
Guo was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
The Court of Criminal appeals declined to hear the case in April. Today's ruling is a refusal to reconsider, meaning Guo's final chance has been turned down. He will never get out of prison again.
