Arlington Police remember officer killed in line of duty 10 years ago

The Arlington Police Department has remembered an officer who was killed in the line of duty one decade ago today.

About 40 people gathered Monday morning at the gravesite of Arlington police officer Jillian Smith.

On December 28, 2010, the 24-year-old Smith was shot and killed while on a domestic violence call.

"Jillian Smith was the most recent of our line of duty deaths that we've had here at Arlington," says Sgt. Michael Chitty, Arlington Police Dept. spokesman. "She is thought of often, and we definitely miss her and her sacrifice that she made for the community here in Arlington."

Smith was with the Arlington Police Department for ten months and had just finished her field training 15 days before she was killed.

Sgt. Chitty says Ofc. Smith was dedicated to her job.

"She was energetic and excited and had a great sense of responsibility in wanting to serve the community," says Sgt. Chitty.

The man who shot Smith to death shot and killed his estranged girlfriend before killing himself.
