In Corsicana, repeated attacks at the home of a gay family are now being investigated as hate crimes.
Terry Garner and Keith Dowler put up rainbow flags for Pride Month but someone came to their house, ripped the flags down, and burned them. They put up more flags, but those were ripped down too. Garner says his family is using this as an opportunity to spread a positive message.
"We thought we'd take an opportunity to use this to show people we're like everybody else, we just want to raise our daughter, we just want to be normal people, and we want to be good citizens of the community," Garner said.
At last night’s city council meeting, Garner asked city officials to declare the rest of June Pride Month and create a department of inclusion and diversity. As for the vandal - they’re still out there.
Police say extra patrols are being added around Garner and Dowler’s home. Their neighbors put together a $1,300 reward for whoever turns the vandal in.
