A popular baby eaglet at White Rock Lake has grounded itself after falling from its nest on Friday evening, prompting Dallas Park and Recreation to enforce emergency safety restrictions.
The eaglet—one of three born this March to local eagle celebrities "Nick and Nora"—fell during what experts call a perfectly normal, albeit clumsy, transition into learning how to fly. To protect the vulnerable bird from curious crowds getting too close, city officials have closed the playground and the section of East Lawther Drive between the playground and the Dreyfuss split to all walkers and bikers. The White Rock Lake Loop Trail remains open.
Wildlife officials and city biologists are monitoring the site daily and urge the public to give the eagles space, warning that human interference could cause stress or prevent the parents from feeding the grounded chick. According to the North Texas Wildlife Center, falling and missing landings is a standard part of the "branching" and fledgling process, which can last from a few days to a couple of weeks. Visitors are strictly reminded to stay at least 300 feet away from the nest, keep pets leashed, and respect the road closures so the eaglet can safely practice its flight and return to the nest.
