The City of Bedford is working to create a "Wow" development in the heart of the city -- and now, it chooses a firm to oversee the project.

The Bedford City Council unanimously selected Old Town Development of Roanoke to oversee the design and construction of Bedford Commons.

The 54-acre project will be done in two phases and will consist of townhomes, offices, restaurants and retail.

One of the objectives is for people to spend time outdoors.

"If you're going to create a cohesive development the works together, you need connectivity, you need walkability and you really want to set a precedent," Justin Springfield with Old Town Development told the City Council.

Springfield says creating unique experiences is the company's forte.

"The way we've always intended to do that is by partnering with really hyperlocal businesses and dining establishments that are destination and experiential-oriented -- to not create a location, but to create a destination," says Springfield.

Mayor Michael Boyter says Old Town Development's task now is to live up to those words.

"We clearly want something 'wow.'" says Mayor Boyter. "We want something special. We want something that doesn't exist around here."

No word on when construction will begin.
