BEDFORD (1080 KRLD) - The City of Bedford is now officially out of patience with a property owner who put up several illegal cottages in the back yard.
The city gave Chandra and Sachin Gupta until this past Monday to knock down and remove around a dozen cottages that they had put up in the back yard of their home on Glenwood Ct.
That day came and went with no meaningful action.
"They made a very very small effort to remove a little bit," says Bedford City Manager Jimmy Stathatos, "but we're mobilizing to take care of the problem, as we predicted."
The city has tried working with the Guptas for years, to no avail.
"They were somewhat defiant, and then they kind of transitioned to wanting to negotiate with us," says Stathatos. "And we told them that time has expired."
So now, the city has hired a contractor to do the work that the Guptas have failed to do for years.
"They are going to enter the property on Tuesday, and we suspect that it will take Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to clear out all the violations and illegal structures."
The Guptas say they no longer own the property, but the Tarrant Appraisal District says otherwise.
Almost everyone who had been living in squalid conditions back there has left.
"Everyone has vacated, except for one individua," Stathatos says. "And he told us today that he'll be out this weekend."
The city will send the Guptas a bill for the work the contractor will do.
"It's going to be close to $40,000," says Stathatos.
