Two student-designed crosswalks in Bedford are being removed this month to comply with a new Texas policy banning non-standard street markings that don’t directly support traffic control or safety.
The artwork, located outside Bedford Junior High and Harwood Junior High, must be taken out after the city was unable to secure exemptions to keep the designs.
The Texas Transportation Commission approved the change earlier this year, directing cities to eliminate decorative or customized crosswalks that fall outside state specifications.
Bedford officials say the student paintings were not political and had been popular among families, but the updated rules give municipalities little discretion.
The removal is part of a statewide effort to standardize roadway markings, and Bedford says work will be completed before the end of the month.
