Capitol riot suspect asks to have ankle monitor removed

Eddy (1080 KRLD) - A Central Texan suspected of taking part in the insurrection at the US Capitol is told he'll have to abide by conditions set in his bond.

Eddy business owner Christopher Ray Grider wanted his ankle monitor removed in order to have "more flexibility to take his kids on trips this summer." Conditions also include observing a curfew from 10 pm to 6 am.

He was arrested on January 21st on a seven-count indictment and released on February 24th. Former US Attorney Matthew Orwig says this is not the type of conduct that would indicate Grider has accepted responsibility. He says he's had clients who have been fortunate to be out on release. "I always advise them to show some humility, show some remorse and be grateful for the conditions the judge imposed as opposed to keeping them in custody."

Orwig says the judge did release Grider, but the charges are serious and it was a very close call. "He was lucky to be getting out of custody at all. For him to make this appeal to the judge, it's no surprise that it would fall on deaf ears. The purpose of conditions of release are not for convenience or for flexibility. The purpose is to make sure you make sure you show up when you're supposed to show up. I think he might have missed the point."

Charges against Grider include obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting, destruction of government property and aiding and abetting; entering and remaining in a restricted building; disorderly and disruptive conflict in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly conduct in a Capitol Building; impeding passage through the Capitol grounds or buildings, and an act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings.

He has pleaded not guilty and says he was there on January sixth because he wanted his voice to be heard, and not to commit violent acts.
