With schools starting this week and next, many drivers may have questions about the laws governing school buses and their stop signs.
The McKinney Fire Department has published a simple chart showing drivers' obligations when approaching a bus with its stop sign extended.
On a two-lane street with no center divider, both directions must stop completely until the sign is retracted.
The same is true on a multi-lane road with a center left-turn lane. Drivers must stop no matter which direction they're going.
However, on a divided highway with a median, either unpaved or with a barrier, drivers following the bus must stop completely. But on-coming traffic need not stop. However, proceeding with caution is a must.
