GRAPEVINE (1080 KRLD) - Like most things in 2020, the holidays will look a little different this year. Still, officials in Grapevine-- also known as The Christmas Capital of Texas-- say they are preparing for a busy holiday season despite COVID-19.
"It's just going to be different," says Kimber Foster, Director of Marketing and Brand Management for the Grapevine Convention and Visitor's Bureau. "It's going to be a different year, but you know, I feel like we've had some time to adjust to the changes that we've been facing."
Foster says most of Grapevine's Christmas events are still happening ... with modifications. For example: The North Pole Express will only be at 50 percent capacity, and the normal treats and goodies will not be served like usual this year The train ride will also be a little longer than it has been in the past, and Santa himself will be onboard.
Other Grapevine Christmas staples have been altered as well. The street lighting event has a virtual element to it this year, and instead of the ICE! exhibit at the Gaylord Texan, the hotel and convention center is now offering an interactive movie experience.
Earlier this month, Grapevine hosted a conference of more than 600 people at the Gaylord Texan. So far, Foster says no attendees have reported getting COVID-19.
Safety measures implemented during the convention, like social distancing and mask wearing policies, are being used during the city's upcoming holiday events as well.
Foster says the convention makes her feel hopeful about the holiday season and the city's ability to safely host more big events in the future.
