Cities across North Texas prepare for COVID-19 vaccines

More first responders in North Texas are getting their Covid 19 vaccines, including some with Dallas Fire Rescue.

Fifty of Pfizer's vaccines were given to Dallas Fire Rescue by Parkland hospital, and they were administered this morning.

Officials say more vaccines are on the way to DFW. Dallas is getting 2,000 doses of Moderna's vaccine from the Texas Department of State Health Services … those could start being distributed as soon as Saturday.

Officials in Arlington say they're waiting on a shipment of 3,000 Moderna vaccines and will start vaccinating first responders and health care workers as soon as they can.

"We are excited to be a part of the solution to beginning the end of this pandemic," says Dr. Cynthia Simmons, Public Health Authority for the City of Arlington. "This is something that our front line health care providers have been battling for months now. The idea that we can now offer them something to protect themselves is just thrilling."

The vaccine distribution site is already set up inside the Esports Stadium Arlington + Expo Center (formerly known as the Arlington Convention Center).

"This is just the first step," Dr. Simmons says. "We anticipate there will be more vaccines that will come, and we'll expand this process to include high risk and vulnerable populations and the general public."
