The Dallas City Council got a report Wednesday on how DART handled last month's winter weather events.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit shut down all light rail and bus services for the first time in its history at 12 p.m. on Feb. 4 through 12 p.m. on Feb. 6 due to ice. But at noon on Feb. 4, the ice started to melt, and the city declared an end to the emergency at 7 p.m. Suspending all bus service blindsided many commuters trying to navigate freezing rain and sleet.
Councilmember Cara Mendelsohn said DART gets a "D" on how it handled the ice, and for communications.
"My experience with DART over 15 years is that educating the community, certainly doesn't mean anything other than you will tell us exactly how it's going to be -- period," Mendelsohn said. "And that's not a great model."
DART President and CEO Nadine Lee said it will get better moving forward.
"My goal is not to judge what has happened in the past, but make improvements in the future," she said.
DART is looking at weatherizing the light rail system, improving communication, and developing strategies for service suspension and restoration.
