A 9-year-old boy from Colleyville is recovering after being bitten by a copperhead snake while playing in his backyard. The incident occurred last Saturday when Barrett Love was searching for a football near a flower bed, unknowingly stepping into the snake’s hiding spot.

His parents initially thought it was a minor sting, but within minutes, the swelling intensified, prompting an urgent trip to the hospital. Doctors at Baylor administered antivenom before transferring him to Cook Children’s Medical Center for further monitoring.

Wildlife experts warn that snake season is in full swing across North Texas, with copperheads and rattlesnakes becoming more active. The Love family is now planning to modify their landscaping to reduce potential hiding spots for venomous snakes.

Officials advise residents to remain vigilant, avoid thick ground cover, and seek immediate medical attention if bitten. Barrett is expected to make a full recovery, though his family hopes their experience serves as a cautionary tale for others.
