The sudden death of a North Texas middle schooler is hitting hard, with friends and family saying the 13-year-old had a huge impact during her short time on Earth.

Brooklyn “Mighty” Moran, who earned her nickname for her fierce soccer skills, was killed Friday afternoon when a drunk driver crossed the center line on Castle Drive near Toler road and collided head on with the car she was in.

“She loves people,” says Jon Patterson, Mighty’s longtime soccer coach. “Always smiling, always happy.” Her soccer team held a small vigil yesterday. “To just remember all the things we loved about Mighty,” Patterson says. “The girls are faring well, but very upset. You know, this tragedy and poor decision by a person has just absolutely taken away a loved one from them.”

Patterson says if there is one thing Mighty’s family and friends are feeling comforted by, it’s her faith in God. “Her dad and I were talking Saturday and he said, ‘“Jon, she loves her Bible. It’s highlighted one end to the next.’” He says Mighty was recently Baptized, as well.

Mighty was a student at Hudson Middle School in Sachse. The Garland ISD issued this statement following her death:

“With a broken heart, we share this very sad news with you. Hudson Middle student, Brooklyn Moran, was involved in a head-on collision Friday night that left her in critical condition, and she ultimately passed away.

Our deepest sympathies are with Brooklyn’s family and everyone at Hudson who knew and loved her.

Hudson and Garland ISD counselors will be on campus and will continue to be available to support our campus, our staff, and any student in need.

This loss touches the hearts of many of our GISD staff, students, and community. We ask that you keep her family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Mighty’s mom, Brittany, was driving the car at the time of the crash. She survived, but is in critical condition with a long road ahead of her. Patterson says she’s undergone several surgeries and will need years of therapy.

The family is asking for donations via Zelle under the phone number 469-703-3339. Food donations and gift cards can be sent through Mighty’s dad at David.Moran2yahoo.com.

According the Garland police, 30-year-old Jeremy Spencer stayed at the scene of the crash. He’s been arrested and charged with two counts of intoxication assault and one count of intoxication manslaughter.
