Designed as a way to inspire African American middle and high school students to explore their profound heritage, the Robert and Charmaine Price Know Your Heritage Bowl at African American Museum, Dallas will be contested on Saturday morning.
This intellectual competition will see 22 teams from various area districts compete at the museum, with a focus on knowledge of the rich heritage and history of African Americans.
The event traces its roots back to the 1980s when a student from the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) participated in a similar event in Chicago. Drawing inspiration from this, they decided to create their own version, only for it to fade away for a period.
Robert Eddison, the curator of education for the African American Museum Dallas, is leading the organization of the event, which was revived last year.
"We felt that it was time to bring it back... since we've recently had so much resistance and controversy related to teaching African American history," Eddison says.
The Heritage Bowl will test the students' knowledge across various categories, from local history and early African American history to contemporary African American history, including current events.
"Whether it's sports, art, science, politics, technology, medicine, inventors...we hit the spectrum,” Eddison adds.
The schools scheduled to be involved include Dallas ISD’s Booker T. Washington High School for the Visual and Performing Arts, James Madison High School and Longfellow Career Exploration Academy; DeSoto ISD’s Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School, Katherine Johnson Technical Magnet Academy, DeSoto High School and DeSoto West Middle School; Richardson ISD’s Berkner High School STEM Academy and Lake Highlands High School; and Wilmer ISD’s Wilmer Hutchins High School.
The event is free and open to the public, providing an opportunity for the community to witness and support the participating students.
The competition will be held in the museum auditorium, starting at 9 a.m.
