The African American Museum, Dallas (AAM), is proud to announce The Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra of Houston Concert, on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 5 p.m. The event will be hosted at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters’ Bruton Theater, at 1309 Canton St. in Dallas.
This performance marks the orchestra's eighth appearance in Dallas and serves as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, celebrating its profound influence on American culture. The event will also feature a special performance by the South Dallas Children’s Choir, an extension program of the African American Museum, Dallas, showcasing a selection of captivating ballads.
"Bring the whole family, " says Dr. Anne Lundy, the founder and music director of SJCO. "Whether you're from the African American community or from the Latin community, Asian, White, whatever, there are going to be things that you will learn and appreciate."
The musical repertoire for the evening will pay homage to renowned hip-hop artists like David Laundry, Jazzy Jeff, and Will Smith. Additionally, the Orchestra will present soul-stirring spirituals, including "Lord, I Looked Down the Road," "Hard Trials," and "Holy Spirit, Don’t You Leave Me," as well as popular hits like "Ain't No Stopping Us Now."
Adding a classical touch to the performance, the Orchestra will present "Sinfonia in D," composed by Chevalier de Saint-Georges (Joseph Bologne, 1739-1799).
"A lot of times when people leave the concerts, they're curious," Dr. Lundy adds. "They want to go out and just look things up. They want to find out more. So to me, that's part of what Black history can be about. Be curious. Just go look something up. Find out something new."
Ticket proceeds will benefit the Museum's South Dallas Children’s Choir, with ticket options available at $15 and $25, along with a limited number of $75 VIP tickets, which can be purchased both at the Museum and on Ticketmaster.com.
