An 18-year-old woman was killed Sunday evening after being struck by a jet ski while kayaking on Grapevine Lake, prompting a search for the driver who fled the scene.
The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. near Oak Grove Park, where Ava Renee Moore was kayaking when a jet ski carrying two women collided with her. Moore sustained severe head trauma and was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
According to authorities, the passenger on the jet ski remained at the scene and cooperated with first responders, while the driver fled with an adult male companion. The pair reportedly struck another vehicle while leaving the area.
Texas Game Wardens are leading the investigation into Moore's death, while Grapevine police are handling the related hit-and-run incident. A photo of the suspected jet ski driver has been released, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Grapevine Police detectives at cidmail@grapevinetexas.gov.
Moore, who had recently graduated from the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School, was visiting her family in North Texas for Memorial Day weekend. She was preparing to begin basic training with aspirations of a military career.
Witnesses at the lake described the jet ski as being operated recklessly prior to the collision. One bystander, Lisa Scrabeck, assisted in rendering aid to Moore after she was pulled ashore. Scrabeck noted that Moore was wearing a life jacket and expressed condolences to the family.
The tragic incident has raised concerns about water safety and the importance of responsible boating behavior. Authorities continue to seek information leading to the identification and apprehension of the individuals involved.
