Dallas (1080 KRLD) - Four thousand people are expected to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference this weekend at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. The head of Visit Dallas said the conference would lead to $400,000 in direct spending and have a total economic impact of $650,000.
The event started Friday afternoon with smaller panels, including "Engaging on Social Media" and "How to Talk about Issues Without Starting a Back Alley Brawl."
Another meeting called "Activism Applied: How to Save Your School Board," included two Carroll ISD school board trustees.
"Let's keep politics out of our kids' education," says Trustee Hannah Smith. "Let's teach history, math, science and English. Let's not teach political ideologies and certainly not indoctrinate our kids into leftist political ideologies."
"What this conference is doing is really educating people on how to get involved," says Trustee Cameron Bryan.
In the May 2021 school board election in Carroll ISD, turnout was 14% across Tarrant County.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Donald Trump Jr. were scheduled to speak Friday afternoon and evening.
Former Governor Rick Perry will be at the event on Saturday. Former President Donald Trump is expected to speak at the end of the conference Sunday.
Among those attending was a group from Massachusetts hoping to learn about how to draw more moderates to the Republican Party.
"Our job is less focused on Republicans and really speaking to the independents who make up 54% of the electorate in Massachusetts," says Jeffrey Sossa-Paquette, who is running for the GOP nomination to the 2nd Congressional District in Massachusetts.
"I want to hear about Immigration, second amendment rights, things that are affecting us," another woman from Massachusetts said.
