A Crowley ISD junior ROTC instructor was fatally shot in his front yard on Friday, police say. Hours later it is revealed the person who shot him was his own son.

Retired Army Master Sgt. Gene Bass died after the shooting. It was first reported "one of his relatives" was arrested in connection to the shooting -- more than 800 miles away in Valdosta, Georgia.

According to a police affidavit released Monday afternoon,  27-year-old Xavier Bass approached his father while holding a gun and started firing. Bass ran and hid under a trailer but was shot several times before police say the suspect drove off.

The victim's son lives in Georgia and that's where police tracked him down after speaking with his mother as well as a woman who told investigators Bass planned to drive to Texas claiming 'she'd find out why when she saw him on the news."

Bass' brother said Bass was a good father, had a good heart, and that he wanted to help teenagers find the right path in life.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting.
