Dallas will soon make it illegal to vape in public spaces under a new city ordinance set to take effect December 10.

The change expands the city’s existing smoking ban to include e-cigarettes and other vaping devices in all areas where smoking is already prohibited.

The ordinance means vaping will no longer be allowed in restaurants, workplaces, public transit, city parks, or within 15 feet of building entrances.

City officials say the goal is to protect residents from exposure to secondhand aerosols and to align local rules with public health standards already adopted in other Texas cities.

Violations can result in fines of up to $500. Businesses are expected to update “no smoking” signage and educate customers about the new restrictions before enforcement begins in December.
