Dallas officials begin enforcing a citywide ban on vaping in public places today, bringing e-cigarettes under the same restrictions that already apply to traditional smoking.

The ordinance prohibits vaping indoors, within 15 feet of building entrances and on city park property.

The rules were approved by the Dallas City Council last year, with a one-year phase-in period to give businesses and residents time to adjust. City leaders say the ban is intended to reduce secondhand exposure to vapor products and create consistency across local smoking policies.

Under the ordinance, violations can carry fines of up to $500. The city has emphasized education over enforcement during the rollout but says citations are now possible as full implementation begins.

Dallas joins a growing number of cities nationwide that have updated smoking laws to include e-cigarettes, reflecting concerns about youth vaping and public health impacts. Officials plan to monitor compliance as the ban takes effect across workplaces, restaurants, parks and other public areas.
