A prominent Dallas businessman was killed Sunday in South Africa after being gored by a charging Cape buffalo during a big game hunt, according to local reports.

Asher Watkins, founder of Watkins Ranch Group, was tracking a 1.3-ton buffalo — nicknamed "Black Death" for its notorious aggression — on the 50,000-acre Bambisana concession in Limpopo Province when the animal charged unexpectedly. He was reportedly killed instantly.

Watkins, who was accompanied by a professional guide and a tracker at the time of the incident, was pursuing the buffalo on foot when it emerged from thick cover and struck. The safari operator described the animal's behavior as "unprovoked."

Known for his luxury ranch brokerage, Watkins specialized in high-end properties, with listings ranging from $1 million to $30 million. He also drew attention on social media for posting images of himself posing with hunted animals, including mountain lions and birds of prey.

According to information from the safari company, African buffalo are responsible for multiple hunter deaths each year. "The buffalo is regarded as the most dangerous animal to pursue in Africa," the site reads. "Crafty and belligerent, he seeks refuge in thickets and charges unprovoked. Prepare for the worst."

Watkins' body is expected to be returned to the United States in the coming days. His family is planning a memorial service.
