Prominent Dallas civil rights attorney Lee Merritt is behind bars in McKinney this morning after getting arrested during a demonstration Sunday.

Reports say Merritt was arrested on a weapons charge and on one court of obstructing a highway or passageway. Both are Class B Misdemeanors.

It's still a little murky as to what the demonstration was about. Merritt was arrested Sunday afternoon and held in jail overnight, apparently until he can go before a magistrate.

Merritt has become well known in North Texas and nationally by defending high profile figures, often in racially charged cases. For example, he represented the family of a man who died in the Collin County jail and Merritt said he had been unlawfully restrained and pepper sprayed by jailers during what the family insisted was a mental health crisis.

Merritt also represented the mother of Ahmaud Arbery who was killed in a race-based killing in Georgia.

He also briefly was in the running for Texas Attorney General in 2022 but suspended his campaign before the Democratic primary.
