A gun battle in downtown Dallas last night -- and a Dallas College police officer and another man are still in the hospital.
This was about 6:30 p.m. right outside the Dallas College El Centro campus on Elm.
A Dallas College officer was investigating what police call "a suspicious vehicle." When he ran the driver's license, it came back there's a felony warrant in his name.
So, during the arrest, the driver pulls a pistol and opens fire. The officer returned fire and some people ducked for cover while others -- for instance inside the 7-eleven right there on Elm -- came out to see what was going down.
Both the officer and the other man were wounded.
Late last night we learned the officer is in stable condition but the other guy is critical. There are two parallel investigations underway -- one conducted by Dallas PD and other by the Dallas County District Attorney's office.
