It was a spirited debate, but Dallas County Commissioners voted to start targeting zip codes with the most vulnerable populations.
Some commissioners were concerned that the people being vaccinated at the Fair Park mega center, where from more affluent areas of Dallas. So Tuesday, the court decided to prioritize the most vulnerable zip codes, many in south Dallas. They would sign them up first, before allowing other zip codes to register.
"We all know very well, that we can pour resources into those zip codes and we will be lucky to get 85% of those appointments filled with those folks," Commissioner JJ Koch said. "After those prioritized, the remainder will go to other zip codes."
Judge Clay Jenkins warned against the move.
"You are doing those zip codes and some surrounding counties. But there are others who are sick and vulnerable in other counties are being short changed," he said.
Health officials say there is an outreach effort underway in minority neighborhoods to encourage vaccine registration.
