Dallas City Council considers new short-term rental regulations

The city of Dallas looks to be getting closer to regulating Airbnbs.

There are currently no regulations on short-term rentals, like Airbnbs, in the city, but for the past several months the council has heard complaints from residents who said their neighborhoods are filled with loud guests at neighboring Airbnbs.

Some recommendations have been made, like a citywide registry of short-term rentals and tougher fines for those who violate rules.

Councilwoman Paula Blackmon said the council needs to act.

"I'm tired of the mistruths, I'm tired of the [finger] pointing," Blackmon said "We've got to fix this, and if we can't do it then I guess it's all lose. Everybody fend for themselves, which is not a good option either."

Councilman Omar Narvaez said he wanted to go further, suggesting the council "just ban them at this point." Narvaez went on to suggest "if ZOAC (Zoning Ordinance Advisory Committee) comes back and comes up with land use that works, fantastic."

The committee voted to move to the full council before voting on specific regulations.
