The Dallas County Democratic Party is pressing Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson to resign after he suddenly changed his political party affiliation to Republican. And the local Democrat party chairman plans to call out the Mayor at today's City Council meeting.
In Dallas, a candidate cannot run for city council or mayor under a party affiliation. But Johnson was a Democrat when he served in the Texas Legislature.
So when Johnson wrote a recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal about switching to the GOP it made national headlines.
SMU political science professor Matthew Wilson says Republicans will try to use the Republican mayors in Fort Worth and now Dallas to their advantage.
Wilson says as a Republican African-American mayor of a major city, Johnson immediately becomes a hot commodity in the GOP should he decide to run for higher office.
