Dallas has experienced a significant drop in crime over the past several years, with the overall crime rate down 10% from last year, according to Maj. Nathan Swyers of the Dallas Police Department. Aggravated assaults and murder rates have seen the sharpest declines.

"We're down with everything with the exception of business robberies," he said. "And we are working on initiatives to try to bring that down."

Murders in the city have decreased by 27% this, marking a notable improvement in public safety. Swyers attributed part of the success to a new initiative aimed at deterring repeat offenders, which the department is rolling out to further curb crime.

"We're modeling this off of a program that's been used in Philadelphia and they have shown great success in this," Swyers said. "What we're looking at doing mainly is Saturday mornings. Is what they have found is Saturday mornings between certain time periods, they're able to catch these people at home."

City officials are optimistic that these efforts will continue to drive crime down in the coming years.
