Dallas city leaders are pausing plans to shift trash collection from alleys to curbs in thousands of neighborhoods. The decision affects about 44,000 homes with narrow 8- to 9-foot alleys, where city trucks have struggled to safely maneuver.

Instead of moving forward this fall, officials say they will conduct a broader review and survey residents in October and November to gather feedback. The city is also exploring whether private waste companies could provide alley service in the future, though that option could lead to higher costs for homeowners.

The proposed change has drawn concern from residents who say moving bins to the curb could create clutter on streets and sidewalks. City staff originally argued that curbside pickup would reduce damage to alleys, improve efficiency for sanitation crews, and cut down on maintenance costs.

For now, no final decision has been made. Dallas leaders plan to revisit the issue once the survey results are complete and options for long-term service are fully evaluated.
