The City of Dallas will hire a private company to conduct DNA testing on more than 1,800 sexual assault kits.

The Dallas City Council recently approved a $2.3 million contract with a DNA testing company called Bode.

Executive Assistant Chief Albert Martinez with the Dallas Police Department says they have more than a thousand kids that have been waiting for tests since 2011.

Martinez says the city normally uses the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences for DNA testing of crime samples, but they've been dealing with staffing shortages and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
