Interim Dallas Police Chief Michael Igo announced his retirement Wednesday, ending a 33-year career with the department.
Igo, who stepped into the interim role following the departure of former Chief Eddie Garcia, made the emotional announcement during a Dallas City Council meeting. His remarks were met with a standing ovation from both council members and fellow officers in attendance.
"I wore this badge with pride every day, and I leave this department knowing it is in the hands of individuals who honor what it represents," he said.
The announcement comes just days after the department named Daniel Comeaux as its new police chief. Igo had been considered one of the finalists for the permanent position.
Igo did not specify his future plans but expressed gratitude for his time with the department and the city.
