A Dallas ISD student has been arrested for shooting a trainer in San Antonio. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa says the student was on the Kimball High School boys' basketball team, which had traveled to San Antonio for the state semi-finals.

On Wednesday afternoon, police say the team had boarded their bus to go from practice to dinner. They say the player had brought a gun, and the gun discharged accidentally when it was moved in the bag.

A student trainer was hit in the ankle.

Senior Kyron Henderson was arrested on two felony gun charges.

"That gun should have never been anywhere in the possession of any student, especially on the bus," Hinojosa said.

The athlete was arrested. The student trainer went to the hospital but should be OK.

Hinojosa said student-athletes in Dallas ISD have had success this school year with South Oak Cliff's state football championship and Kimball advancing to the basketball semi-finals, but he says this shooting will overshadow those accomplishments.

"I tell people all the time: You're only as good as your reputation," Hinojosa said. "You can do so many good things and build it up, but one bad thing will pull you down."

UIL has agreed to let Kimball participate in the semifinals Thursday night. Hinojosa says the student has been cut from the team.

"We will, to the full extent of our policies, execute student discipline," Hinojosa said. "There are much bigger things he has to worry about: legal matters and criminal matters."

Hinojosa says he plans to attend the semifinal Thursday, saying UIL showed "grace" in letting Kimball compete.

"I'm glad the San Antonio Police Department got some resolution so these kids who had nothing to do with it can go compete," Hinojosa said.

Hinojosa also encouraged others to attend, saying UIL has "tremendous security checks" going into the arena.

The Knights went on to lose Thursday night in a rematch of last year's UIL 5A state championship. Beaumont United beat Kimball 66-to-64.
